Two Tips - Don't be Afraid to Ask For Help; Relax and Enjoy the Ride

Alicia and Charles were married in the Hollin Hall Fireplace Room on October 15. (See blog posted dated October 17). She rated us a “5” out of “5.” Alicia said,

“...Hollin Hall’s fireplace room and surrounding gardens were PERFECT my wedding day! The fireplace room had the ambiance I envisioned for my wedding because it was welcoming, intimate and truly felt like it was just for us. There is absolutely nothing that I would change about the setting. Hollin Hall was charming, quaint and beautiful before my wedding and now has a warm and very special place in my heart. Creating and Staying on Budget

A few tips to brides on how to create and stay on budget...

First, have a budget and be very specific on what is and is not in the budget. Does it include the cost of the the dress and alterations, hair & make up for the bridal party, tuxedo rentals, gifts for the bridesmaids and groomsmen? Also, what about the items the groom's family typically pays for?

When I work with brides I create a very detailed spreadsheet which includes everything right down to the postage for the invitations and reply envelopes before we sign a contract. When I have a bride who tells me her budget is 45K for 125 guests I put together a detailed budget which includes everything she wants and in a mid-range price, i.e., designer linens, a three-course meal, lovely flowers, etc. so that when it comes to choosing vendors she doesn't have to do an "upgrade" on everything to get what she wants.

I will allocate the appropriate amount of money to the items that are most important to her and get savvy on the necessary, but less important items. I strongly recommend that before a bride signs with any wedding planner, she has them show (in detail) how they will stay on budget. My goal is to agree upon a detailed budget before signing a contract so once that has been established the planning process is enjoyable, not stressful. If I can't give a bride what she wants within her budget I will be the first to tell her so. However, I rarely find this necessary once we have had a chance to go over all of the costs related to having a wedding line by line.

Sometimes the golden horse drawn carriage has to go but I promise to get the bride to the church on time and in style.

Each promised "I will love and honor you with my heart, words and actions...." Jodi Arbor Johnson, www.waterfront wedding services, was wedding celebrant.

A Year In the Planning - Jocelyn and Alex

Determined to have their ceremony outdoors, Jocelyn and Alex waited for a break in the day's persistent rain and were married on the slate patio with a backdrop of foliage.

Kelly and Ken were high school sweethearts who found each other again and decided not to let their second chance to be together pass them by. They were married in the Meeting House Chapel on September 24.

The garden ceremony they had planned was moved indoors because of the "iffy" weather.

The dinner tables were pre-set along the sides of the room.

Focus on What's Important

I ran into Jenny & Chris on the grounds of Hollin Hall this past weekend as we were setting up for a wedding. They were there reminiscing about their wedding on September 6, 2009. (Happy Anniversary!) I asked them to share some advice for couples planning weddings and this is what they said.

"We would advise couples who have just begun the wedding planning process to focus on priorities--don't get lost in the details. It was really important to us to have authentic food representing our two cultures, so we spent a lot of time and effort in getting that just right. To this day, our friends still reminisce about our whole Chinese roast pig and Persian cherry rice. Things like table arrangements were less important to us, so we went for something simple. Hollin Hall is such a beautiful venue, we were able to keep our own decorations at a minimum. Remember that it's your wedding and you can plan to include or not include whichever traditions or components you want. We had no wedding party, a short and sweet ceremony and no long speeches so our guests had plenty of time to enjoy the food, the open bar and the lovely Hollin Hall grounds."

Melinda and Darrell - A Perfect Pair

Even Hurricane Irene couldn't dampen the spirits of Mimi and Randy who were married at Hollin Hall on August 27, 2011. Their program included the verse “Many waters cannot quench love, nor can the floods drown it ...” from Songs of Solomon 8:7.

The ceremony, planned for the Walled Garden, was moved to Historic Hall Hall. Pastor Emmanuel Dunyo officiated.

The reception, catered by Be My Guest Catering, was in the Meeting House. Be My Guest owner Winston Sanchez served as Wedding Planner/Coordinator. Nomad Event Systems provided the lighting and draping.

The wedding colors were “watermelon dripped with mint and pearl drops.”

Finding your perfect wedding venue

I don't believe you will find any other article in the entire universe that will talk about the insider secret I am about to let you in on. It's so basic that I believe it alludes many couples planning their wedding.

The key to a successful venue search begins with ...virtual drum roll please...the quality of your inquiry. Honest to goodness. While handling all of the correspondence and appointments for a unique venue for over a year, I saw all kinds of requests for information. Every venue gets excited to see a new inquiry. Every venue gets super excited to see a quality inquiry.

How do you create a quality inquiry? How do you write your inquiry so the venue wants to respond to you and not ignore you? Yes. You can be ignored. If you think you are somehow protecting yourself by not giving the exact date, month or year you really want in your initial contact along with the true number of guests you may be having is a good move, you are wrong. Venues get inquiries every day. Lots of them. They like it when all of the information is present to know if that potential wedding is a good fit for their property or not. They respect you for having a good grip on what your wedding looks like and want to work with people that appear organized. Lack of key information is a sure sign that you are not serious about planning your wedding and moving forward.

A good idea is to set-up an email account that is dedicated just to receiving all the correspondence from vendors for your wedding. That way, you just simply delete the address and don't have to worry about your personal inbox filling up with information that you no longer need after your wedding (because you're married now! Yippee!). Be careful about the Internet provider you decide to use to set up this account. Make sure that it can receive emails from businesses that have word documents or photos attached. I've had problems with emails sent to Hotmail accounts bouncing back when I was trying to send the requested information.

If you're using www.getmarried.com or www.theknot.com or any other online resource for your search, it is especially important that you double check how you've entered your contact information. A venue has no way of figuring out what is wrong with an email address that you provide or an incorrect phone number. One wrong number or letter means that you are not going to get the information that you are looking for! Be careful!

Make your inquiry conversational and not stiff. Otherwise, you sound like you're the venue's competition shopping their prices! Ever read Trip Advisor and wonder who really wrote that review? It goes without saying that you should be polite.

And, I am going to go even further and say that the person that is responding from the venue should be friendly, warm and polite. I cannot tell you how many times I heard "You're so nice!" or "You're the only one that returned my call" (I love talking to brides on the phone!). If you get a rude response or a bad vibe from someone that is representing a venue...run. Run very fast! It will not get any better from there for you. Ditto if you've provided good, accurate, complete information and the venue does not respond to you. The venue is either disorganized, overwhelmed or doing bad business and you don't need to have your wedding tied up with any of that.

Now you've got the inside track on making your inquiry one that will get respect and a response!

How To Select Your Wedding Photographer

Photographs are an important way to help you remember the moments and share the memories of your wedding. For many folks, the day goes by in a blur and the photographs become how they remember the day.

According to Steven Halperson at Tisara Photography in Old Town, Alexandria, choosing the best photographer for your wedding can seem daunting. You may be tempted to ask a friend or relative to photograph your wedding. If so, remember that the person will be working and less likely to enjoy the event. But most importantly, your friend may not have the experience or equipment to capture those special moments. If your photographer is part time, how available is he to take your calls or meet with you.

Professional photographers often shoot in “raw” format which has many of the benefits of working with negatives from film days. Raw files can be manipulated without losing sharpness. JPEGs on the other hand become noticeably less sharp after a number of openings.

There are several factors to consider when choosing a photographer; talent, style, price, and personality.

Talent and Qualifications – Yes, new photographers can do good work. (Professional photographers were once new and inexperienced too.) But nothing beats experience. Examine the photographer's work. Chances are your wedding photography won't be better than what you see in the display albums or on the website. Read testimonials. Check references. You want your photographer to be in business when it's time to deliver the product!

There are many styles -- traditional, journalistic, candid, formal. Some photographers offer only one type. The best can offer all and will incorporate your preferences into your wedding day coverage.

How much should you expect to pay? You can spend from $500 to $10,000 or more on wedding photography. The norm is to spend about 10% of your entire wedding budget on still photography. Many photographers have packages that include everything from the coverage to albums and prints. Some have a la carte pricing that enables you to select just what you want. If you are on a tight budget this might be the best way to go.

Consider how many hours you want the photographer to be with you (from getting ready to the last good-bye? or for only the ceremony and formals), how many photographers (two can give you wider coverage), as well as what you will receive. Will you receive proof prints, thumbnails or a CD with hundreds or thousands of images for you to review on your own? Will the photographer help you select the best? Will you be able to purchase high resolution digital images or receive an edited CD? If you get a CD remember that digital files don't enjoy the longevity of film. To be safe, CD's should be copied every 5-7 years . Also, technology changes so quickly, equipment may not be available for future viewing. One can hardly find slide projectors these days. As a safeguard, get good quality prints of your favorite images. Chances are good, prints can always be copied.

About personality -- you’ll want to meet personally with your photographer to see if your personalities match. You'll want someone that who will get along well with you, your family, and friends.

As soon as you decide on a photographer, contact him to reserve the time and write a formal contract. Read the contract thoroughly. Everything you are supposed to receive should be written down along with the price and payment schedule. Be aware of their cancellation policy. Don't pay a deposit until you have read and signed the contract (the photographer should sign the contract also).

Meet with meet with your photographer about two weeks before the wedding to review all the details. Be prepared with a list of “must have” photographs. And then, after the wedding, be prepared to enjoy sharing the memories with your families and friends.

A Hindu Vedic Ceremony

Amanda and Rahul celebrated their Hindu Vedic wedding ceremony in the walled garden at Hollin Hall on June 18, 2011. Here the groom's family members, relatives and friends accompany him to the wedding venue in a procession called the Baraat.

The bride's maternal uncle lead her to the Mandap, the designated place in the marriage venue where all rituals are performed. The bride's parents invoke Mandap deities and offer pooja and pray for Mandap sanctification.

A Love Story - Karla and Billy

Karla and Billy met on a Spring day in 2008 at an outdoor food festival in Arlington, VA called the Taste of Arlington. They were introduced by mutual friends and spent the day walking around the festival sampling specialties from area restaurants and getting to know each other. Karla and Billy were immediately smitten with each other, but were too shy that day to exchange contact information. About three weeks later, on a beautiful summer evening, they saw each at the Georgetown waterfront. At that time, they were sure to exchange contact information and have been a couple ever since. Andrew and I actually went to the same high school and parked are cars in the same neighborhood next to the school but never had any classes together or even met one another. The even funnier thing is his best friend from then to current was a friend of mine since middle school, we both graduated high school in 2000, we still did not meet until 2006. Andrew made a big impression on me at our mutual friend's birthday party. We had met one time previous to this but I was in a relationship with someone else at the time. After the relationship ended with the guy I was dating, I decided to contact Andrew and asked him if he would like to go out to dinner with me and our mutual friend and that's where things all began and here we are today.

We both are very excited about our non traditional wedding that is planned for October 29th, 2011. We are planning a Halloween theme. This idea actually came to us at a friend's wedding. We had attended several weddings previously and thought they were all very nice, but thought it we be very cool to do something completely different from anything we had attended. We both love Halloween, especially myself. The plan is to have the guests attend in costume or appropriate evening wedding attire of their choice. We hope most will attend in costume. As for now the costume plan is for the wedding party and bride and groom, is zombies. but not dirty and ratty clothed. We will be dressed in clothing from the 1880's to 1890 (this was the bustle period in ladies clothing). I love making costumes for Halloween and I am actually making my own original wedding dress out of original period clothing patterns.

More than meets the eye . . . .

Back in September 2007, Alice, our mutual friend and soon to be my maid-of-honor, brought me to one of Rahul’s infamous parties. I instantly liked Rahul and found him charming, handsome and successful. However, I concluded that he would be a consummate bachelor, so we remained friendly acquaintances. Years and relationships later, we rediscovered one another when our paths crossed again. We started spending more time together as friends, sharing in our common love for things like sci-fi and action movies, Transformers, roller coasters and weekend adventures. I slowly realized that I admired the way his intelligence and humor complemented his fun spirit and surprising depth. So I took a bold chance on the hope that he could feel the same way about me . . . and that he may not be the quintessential bachelor I initially assumed he was.

Thank God I took that chance! Our friendship transitioned to romance in the spring of 2009 and has blossomed quickly since then. I moved in with him in May, and he surprised me with a proposal this past September. We’re planning a Hindu ceremony and reception at Hollin Hall on Saturday, June 18. Hollin Hall was the first wedding venue we visited, and ultimately, the one we knew was right for us . . . as it is also more than meets the eye!

Sean and Megan met while working together at a small school for students with disabilities in Springfield, VA. They became friends, chatting before and after work. As they got to know each other more, they found they had a lot in common and felt very comfortable together. As their friendship became closer, Megan realized that Sean was the one for her, and said yes when he asked her on their first date, driving along Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park. Three years later, he took her to the same location and proposed during a beautiful Fall sunset. They are planning to be married at Hollin Hall thus summer. Sean, a native of Northern Virginia, and Megan, who relocated to the area from Ohio in 2006, both continue to work with students with special needs in the area. They are looking forward to celebrating their love with family and friends on the beautiful grounds of Hollin Hall.

When should we start planning our honeymoon?

It’s best to make your honeymoon reservations soon after you select the date for your wedding. That will ensure that you’ll get the room you want at the resort you choose. The best rooms usually sell out first, and if your honeymoon is during high season, it may be very difficult to get reasonably priced plane tickets. If you plan your honeymoon in the early stages, you won’t have to worry about it when you are working on all the final details for the wedding.

How do we work with a travel consultant to help us plan our honeymoon or destination wedding?

First, ask friends for recommendations. When you meet with the consultant, make sure she/he is an expert in the area that you plan to travel to. Be prepared to answer questions about what type of hotel you like, what you would like to do while you’re there (are you looking for something active, or do you want to spend most of your time relaxing). Be prepared to give a realistic idea of your budget. The consultant cannot make appropriate suggestion if you say your budget is $10,000 when you really only plan to spend $6,000.

How much lead time do we need to plan a destination wedding?

At least one year. More if you are going to have a large number of guests. Not only does the planning take a lot of time, your guests will need enough notice so they can request time off from work. If you are inviting children, there are school schedules to be considered as well.

Kelly and Joe both attended American University's Washington Semester program in the Spring of 2005. Joe lived in the room next door to a student from the College of Wooster named Jen. Kelly also came to the program from the college of Wooster. Jen introduced Kelly to Joe, who was immediately drawn to her monochromatic blue fleece. They started dating a few weeks later. About 2 weeks into the relationship, Kelly told him she saw herself marrying him in the future. She says she "just knew."

Ed and Kathleen actually met over 10 years ago during high school, although they attended different schools. A mutual friend had introduced them because Kathleen didn’t have a date for an upcoming dance. So, Ed, the polite gentleman that he is, stepped in so that she wouldn’t have to go alone. They really hit it off, but being as how things are always complicated in high school, they decided it would be best to go their separate ways, even though, unbeknownst to either of them, they were both really interested in each other.

Some years passed, they went on through their lives in college and their careers. After some time (and a break-up), Kathleen was on MySpace one day and thought about Ed. Randomly, he had popped into her mind, so she decided to look him up. Somehow, out of all the people named “Ed” on MySpace, he was one of the first listings to show up in the search. So, she decided to contact him, assuming he probably wouldn’t remember who she was since it had been a long time since they had since each other.

Luckily for them, Ed wrote back and did in fact remember her and they agreed to meet up and watch a preseason Redskins football game at a local bar. So, from Alexandria, Kathleen drove out to Ashburn and, after getting lost on the way, met with Ed. They talked the whole night, caught up on where their lives had taken them, and had an all around great time. I don’t think at the time either of them was expecting much; just catching up with a friend. But, they hit it off so well that this time around they weren’t going to let this opportunity pass them by, even if they now lived about 40 miles apart.

After a year of dating, Kathleen and Ed moved in together, and Kathleen brought her dog, Gigi, as well, who adores Ed. And after four years of dating, Ed and Kathleen began to talk about marriage. Then, at the end of October 2010, Ed and Kathleen went to Shenandoah National Park to enjoy one of the last beautiful days of the year before winter. Ed, Kathleen, and Gigi hiked to the highest point of the park, where Ed proposed, and Kathleen, said, “Of course!”

I recently found Selen and Jason on a walk through Huntley Meadows Park, my favorite "sacred space" along with the grounds of Hollin Hall at Mount Vernon Unitarian Church, and asked them to send a photo and a paragraph about their experience with us. This is what Selen wrote:

“We had a very special time in our wedding ceremony in Hollin Hall. Ms. Nina Tisara was the main reason for everything to work out as smoothly as it did. The atmosphere of Hollin Hall's grounds and beautifully manicured 7 feet tall hedge plant natural 'room' that is found on their ground and romantic setting of the white fences and the windmill at the background is just perfect for the wedding reception. My husband and I had a very relaxed and happy wedding reception in beautiful Hollin Hall.”

A Love Story - Nancy and Alex

Nancy and Alex celebrated their marriage on November 6, 2010. Here's the story of how they met and their experience at Hollin Hall.

“Alex and I met for the very first time in first grade. We had the same teacher. I still have a video of us at our first grade recital. He moved away soon after, but we met again through a mutual friend in high school. We became good friends and remained so for another five years before we began to date. Seven years after that, we were meeting with Nina at Hollin House to see if that would be a good place to get married. And it was! Nina was great from the very first meeting. We left that meeting very excited and thought she was extremely sweet, knowledgeable about what would work and what wouldn't work, and offered valuable suggestions. The entire process was pleasant to the end. We changed our mind a lot, from everything to moving the wedding inside and to changing the chairs the day before the wedding. Nina was extremely accommodating and never did she skip a beat. We had a wonderful experience, and we thank Nina and Hollin House for making our wedding vision come to be.”

Preserving Your Wedding Flowers

(excerpted from a presentation by All Seasons Floral Preservation, 2/07)

There are two common methods of flower preservation. "Freeze drying" is a process that results in a 3-D floral arrangement, typically displayed in a table top dome or shadow box. With this method, the flowers are very fragile and brittle and, as a result, may deteriorate and crumble over time. "Pressing" is a process that became popular in the Western world during the Victorian Age. Pressed floral art created with your wedding flowers will be in a frame that can either hang on a wall or be placed in a stand for table top/shelf display. This technique results in a floral design that is literally "pressed" against the glass, thus remaining in a fixed position for you to enjoy for years to come.

Because the freshest flowers make the most beautiful art, your florist plays a key role in the outcome of your artwork. Choose a florist who will use high quality, fresh flowers and arrange them in a way that is not only beatiful, but "durable." The wedding and reception are high enery events that can take quite a toll on a poorly constructed bouquet. The better condition the flowers are in when they are delivered for pressing, the better the otcome of your floral art.

During the pressing process it is natural for the colors of the flowers to change somewhat. Generally speaking, flowers with an "intense" color will press darker--red roses will become a deep burgundy; while flowers with a "softer" color will become lighter--pale pink and white flowers will become a cream color. During a design consultation, it is important to discuss your specific flowers and how they will look once they are pressed.

We asked Kim and Bruce to rate us and their caterers on a scale of 1-5 (5 is best) and this is what Kim said:

"5 and 5!!!! We had such a lovely time. The place was gorgeous. R&R did an excellent job catering, the food was awesome. All of our friends and family were asking us how we found Hollin Hall and were so impressed with its charm! It was definitely a wedding like no other!

"Bruce and I met through friends from work. He is a psychologist and I am a talker. I guess I felt like he listened when I talk. He would stop everything to listen to me talk and I, in return would do something nice for him, simple things, like cook or bring him coffee.

"We chose Hollin Hall for the charming outdoor garden and the details on the inside of the house. We love "old charm", history and unique things that are still very simple. I think Hollin Hall was the perfect choice for us and our friends and family felt so welcomed there.

"Thank you for the memory! It was better than we envisioned!"

A Love Story - Caitlin and Matthew--and--Hints for the Glowing Bride

Caitlin and Matthew met in Cambridge, Massachusetts in March of 2005. They were having a great time at a mutual friend's birthday party. Matthew noticed how Caitlin always closed one eye when she took a beerpong shot. He liked her freckles and curly hair. Caitlin noticed how sharply dressed Matthew was and she thought he was funny. The next week after the party, Matthew asked his coworker, Tag, how he could get to know her better. His friend told him that they all had plans to go to Southie for the St. Patty's parade that Sunday. If you have ever been to Southie on parade day, then you know that the whole town is party-hopping. So, Matthew followed his friends from house party to house party, meeting lots of people, toasting the Irish Patron Saint, and always keeping his eyes open for the young lady he was hoping to see that day. They seemed to keep missing each other. Finally, after a long day, they made their way back to Cambridge, Caitlin and Matthew's paths never having crossed in Southie. When they got there, Caroline, Tag's girlfriend and Caitlin's best friend, called to say they were right down the street and they were coming over!

Caitlin and Caroline came through the door first, followed by seven or eight dudes. The ratio of this gathering had tipped in the wrong direction for a man who was looking to spend some quality time getting to know somebody. However, within the first few minutes, it became apparent that the place down the street where they were all hanging out, was in fact Caitlin's place. Matthew knew that all he had to do was be patient and he might get the opportunity to walk her home. The mob of dudes slowly dwindled until only Tag, Caroline, Matthew and Caitlin were left. As people started to yawn, Matthew offered to escort Caitlin home. Despite a long day of house parties, they talked for hours. They found out about the uncanny amount of things they have in common. When it got really late and they were both struggling to stay awake, they decided it was time to call it a night. But just before he got to the door, he turned and kissed her. They made plans for an official first date. Five and a half years later, their next official date will be the most significant one yet: plans to be married at Hollin Hall on October 9, 2010.

The Glowing Bride~
The bridal "glow" comes from within. but take care to avoid the outward "shine" - the shine that comes by not keeping a matte finish to your makeup for those wedding photos. While a more-than-dewy complexion may look fine to the wedding guests, it can translate into an unattractive shine in photos. There's even the horrifying chance you'll look like you just finished a workout and slipped right into the wedding gown!I recommend using a finely milled powder matched to your skin tone exactly at the jawline and then touching up throughout the wedding day. Blot any oil or sweat that appears with a facial blotting sheet (drug store purchase), and then lightly touch up your look with a light dusting of powder. The powder absorbs light and keeps a more matte look so your features project your joyful glow - not shine! Pressing, not rubbing, blotting paper on your face absorbs the oil/sweat and pushes the powder back to the surface of your skin.Emergency Tip: those disposable seat covers in the ladies' restroom make great blotting paper. no residue, easily available. Shhh.only tell your girlfriends.The scoop on powder - opt for a compact rather than loose powder. It's so much easier to control in a hurry. Avoid bare mineral powders. The edges of the ground minerals reflect light and can give a gray cast or odd luminescence in photos. Mineral powders also don't have the necessary staying power or light-absorbing effect of talc-based powder foundations. A makeup pro experienced with on-site makeup (out of the controlled lighting of a studio) can further advise you on the best choices. Independent or Agency? What happens if you book an independent band or ensemble and they disappear a week before your wedding? And if you have sent them a deposit, what now? Well, you really have no recourse. If you have booked entertainment with a legitimate agency, you will have entertainment for your event.

Here are a couple of really important questions. Say you have "surfed the net" and found a band that looks good. How can you be sure of their track record for a wedding? How can you be sure that they know the protocol for a wedding? How can you be sure that you have been charged a fair price? Professional agencies know what the fair market price of a band, DJ or ensemble should be, and they know the bands that know wedding protocol.

Some entertainers brag that they will not work for an agency, or that you can save a little money if you go directly to them. Aside from the pointers that we have just given you, try getting some of these entertainers on the phone during the day or on a weekend to go over details for your wedding. Chances are that they are out doing their “other job”. Professional agents are there for you all day,every day to answer your questions and meet all of your needs. You won't spend days trying to catch up with them. And-don't forget-most independent bands are not be licensed or insured.
